Draymond Green on flagrant foul 1: “I got choked”

OAKLAND — Warriors forward Draymond Green admitted he did not see the replay. So instead, Green relied on his personal memory when questioning why he received a flagrant foul 1 toward the end of the Warriors’ 116-101 Game 2 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Monday at Oracle Arena.

Green contended he “got choked” and was “put in a choke-hold” by Spurs forward Davis Bertans. Green compared the incident to “like I was in the WWE.” Therefore, Green openly wondered why he was penalized, while Bertans was not.

“If it’s going to be a flagrant foul, shouldn’t it be a double flagrant?” Green said. “I couldn’t just get grabbed around my neck. So I’m not going to sit here and say, ‘Oh I did nothing.’ I’ve got to get someone off my neck, though. If you’re going to penalize me, then why not penalize both? That’s really my only thing.”

As Warriors guard Klay Thompson pulled up for a jumper that gave the Warriors a 103-89 lead with 4:29 remaining in the game, Bertans wrapped his left arm around Green’s chest and neck area. Green immediately swung his right arm and Bertans fell to the ground.

“I think it was a little bit of a flop. I don’t really know if I hit him,” Green said. “I’m not saying I didn’t. I don’t know.”

Yet, Green held out hope that the call “may get rescinded.”

“I didn’t ask the official. We just kept going,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “We’ll hear from the league, I guess. Just got to go with it.”

The play proved insignificant in the Warriors’ Game 2 victory. But it could prove significant in the playoffs.

As part of the NBA’s cumulative points system, Green has one point and is three points away from receiving an automatic one-game suspension. Green was suspended for Game 5 of the 2016 NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers after the league assessed Green with a Flagrant Foul 1 for retaliating over LeBron James standing over him during a Game 4 skirmish.

“I don’t care. It is what it is,” Green said. “Life goes on. More important things in life than worrying about a flagrant point. Maybe they will rescind it.”
