Former NBA basketball star Dennis Rodman, teammate of legendary Michael Jordan in Chicago in the 1990s, received a suspended prison sentence for drunk driving on Monday.

Rodman, 56, will spend 90 days in jail if he does not comply with the terms of his three-year probation period, which includes a nine-month program to raise awareness about the dangers of drug and alcohol consumption.

"The court made the right decision, taking into account the efforts made by Dennis to heal," said his lawyer, Paul S. Meyer. "Dennis has taken responsibility for being sober and has made great progress," he added.

Rodman was arrested in Newport Beach, California, in January, and briefly detained as his blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit.

This was not the first time that the five-time NBA champion, known for his tattoos, piercings, and peroxide hair, was arrested for his behavior behind the wheel.

In February 2017, he was sentenced to 30 hours of community service for causing a traffic accident while taking an exit from the highway, all without a driver's license.

Rodman played 14 seasons in the NBA and is now also known for his controversial trips to North Korea and his friendship with the country's president, Kim Jong Un.
