The University of West Florida women’s team saw its postseason run come to an end with a 66-54 loss to No. 1 seed Union in the Gulf South Conference championship game on Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama.

UWF (18-12), which entered as the No. 6 seed, finished as the tournament’s runner-up for the second straight season. Union (28-3) swept the GSC’s regular-season and tournament titles.

Union started the game on an 11-0 run and went up 13-1 with 2:49 left in the first quarter and went up 36-23 at halftime.

UWF trailed 44-29 with 3:36 left in the third quarter before reeling off an 11-0 run and eventually cutting Union’s lead to 46-43 in the fourth quarter before Union pulled away late.

Halee Nieman led UWF with 23 points and nine rebounds, while Shaniqua Magee added 14 points and seven rebounds. Belle Bistrow was the other Argo in double figures with 10 points.

UWF struggled shooting the ball, hitting just 14 of 54 field goals (25.9 percent).  

Union’s Chelsey Shumpert was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Nieman, Lee’s Carrie Cheeks, West Alabama’s Tasza Garrett-Hammett, Union’s Sara Lytle and Union’s Jada Perkins.
