The Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei was crowned world champion in the 10,000 meters for the third consecutive time, enlarging a legend that brings him closer to the Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie, who won four consecutive titles between 1993 and 1999.
Cheptegei, world record holder in the 5000 and 10000 meters, confirmed his favoritism on the track of the National Athletics Center in Budapest with a perfect race in which he knew how to withstand his moment in the last lap to change pace and cross the finish line alone with a time of 27:51.42, his best mark of the year.
The Ugandan athlete, who continues to make history in world athletics, celebrated the victory with open arms before claiming his figure with punches to his chest while looking at the crowded stadium, with a capacity for 35,000 spectators.
Behind Cheptegei, who won in Budapest without any 10,000 meter race under his belt this outdoor season, came in second the Kenyan Daniel Simiu Ebenyo (27:52.60) and third the Ethiopian Selemon Barega (27:52.72), Olympic champion in Tokyo.
