The Mexican long-distance runner Citlali Moscote
placed tenth in the marathon event at the World Athletics Championships held in Oregon, a remarkable result for the athlete in her second attempt at this grueling race.
Moscote crossed the finish line with a time of 2:26:33 hours to secure the 10th place in the marathon, a race that was won by Ethiopian athlete Gotytom Gebreslase with a time of 2:18:11. The second place went to Kenyan athlete Judith Jeptum with a time of 2:18:20, and the third place went to Israeli athlete Lonah Chemtai with a time of 2:20:18.
The athlete from Jalisco remained within the top 15 throughout the competition, never slackening the pace and achieving her goal of coming as close as possible to the top positions.
"I will try to place myself as close as possible to the top positions, and if possible, in a historic position for Mexico in the participation in this World Championship. We know that all Mexicans have increased their competitive level, and that helps us athletes to boost each other, so we will aim to be as close as possible," said the runner days before competing.
This is only Citlali's second marathon competition, the first one was in Seville, which took place on February 20, 2022, and where the athlete finished in 10th place with a time of 2:26:13 hours, earning her qualification for the World Championships.
"Since I made the plan with my coach, I imagined myself in a World Championship, although I haven't been an athlete since I was a child, and I have only been practicing athletics for seven years. At the beginning of my career, I never imagined it, and as we saw results, my vision of the competitions expanded, and in 2019 we started planning to aim for Paris 2024, and we are on the right track," said the runner.
The athlete is the current champion of the Mexico City Half Marathon, but she will now evaluate whether to participate in the next edition to be held on July 31.
