Mexico aims to win at least 25 medals in Athletics at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia next summer.
The Mexican Athletics Federation confirmed that they will attend the competition with athletes who have the potential to finish among the top three, most of them chosen in the National Championship in Monterrey on the first weekend of June.
By winning the marathon in Mexicali this month with a time of 2:14:45, two-time Olympian Daniel Vargas became the first confirmed athlete in the Athletics delegation for the Games. He will represent the country in the 42 kilometers 195 meters event alongside Darío Castro, who finished third in Mexicali.
In the women's marathon, the team will consist of the two runners with the best times between September of this year and April 2018, while in race walking, the top two finishers in the world challenge in Monterrey on the last weekend of February will attend Barranquilla.
Mexico won eight gold medals, 11 silver medals and 10 bronze medals in the past regional games held in Veracruz, and now they are preparing to get close to that achievement, which will be challenging because Cuba is considered the favorite, Jamaica will present good sprinters, and Colombia, whose athletics team has grown significantly, will compete at home.
According to the Federation, the top two finishers in Monterrey will represent Mexico in Barranquilla in track events, as long as they meet the minimum required times, except in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters races where times will not be considered and the gold and silver medallists from the National Championship will be chosen.
Mexico is the only country that has participated in every Central American and Caribbean Games, and in Athletics, they have finished among the top three 15 times, including three times in first place, in Mexico 1926, Mexico 1954, and El Salvador 2002, the latter without Cuba's presence.
