Kenyan Athlete Wins New York Marathon Following Recent Attack
Kenyan athlete Geoffrey Kamworor claimed victory in the New York Marathon on Sunday, just five days after the first deadly attack in the city since September 11, 2001.
Kamworor completed the 42.195 km course in 2 hours 10 minutes and 53 seconds, finishing ahead of fellow Kenyan Wilson Kipsang (2h 10min 56sec) and Ethiopian Lelisa Desisa (2h 11min 32sec), who came second and third respectively.
This is Kamworor's first marathon victory, although he is a well-known figure in the athletics world, having finished second in 2015 and also winning two cross-country world championships and one half marathon championship.
The race was not canceled, but security measures were reinforced following a jihadist attack on Tuesday that left eight people dead and 12 injured in Manhattan, not far from the memorial honoring the victims of September 11.
