The American rock music is in mourning
The musician and composer Tom Petty passed away on October 2, 2017, at the age of 66, in UCLA hospital in Santa Monica, California, one day after suffering a heart attack.
Member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since 2002, Petty was the vocalist and leader of the band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the group that performed for 12 minutes during the halftime show of Super Bowl XLII between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants.
The Florida native led one of the most memorable shows in the NFL's biggest game, with a repertoire of his best hits from the 70s and 80s, such as American Girl, I Won't Back Down, Free Fallin', and Running Down a Dream. Thousands of fans gathered that night at the University of Phoenix Stadium surrendered to the rockstar, one of the most respected in the North American scene.
That Super Bowl stands out as one of the most surprising, as the New York Giants, led by Eli Manning, defeated the then undefeated New England Patriots of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick with a score of 14-17, where the most remembered play is when the Giants' quarterback managed to escape from two Patriots players to connect a 32-yard pass with David Tyree, who caught the ball by hitting it with his helmet.
