NBA opens office in Mexico in 1995
The NBA opened an office in Mexico in 1995. The NFL followed suit in 1998. And the Major Leagues? Two of the three most important US leagues decided to directly land in the Mexican market to attend to a close and loyal market. MLB did not judge it in the same way and took other paths, but finally, in 2016 that path led them to the same point where the other leagues already were.
The Majors recognize that absence, but the past is not their priority, they came to look forward and act accordingly. With the presentation of the office, came, now formally, the presentation of the goals, plans, objectives, and desires.
The office director, Rodrigo Fernández, was in charge of giving a global presentation of what MLB is, Mexico, and its fans. It was unusual to see and know where the country stands on baseball.
One of the main topics, and the one that the executive is most questioned about, is the realization of Spring Training and regular season games, after they returned in 2016 and this year there will be no games. And that question will soon have an answer.
"Unfortunately and fortunately, we cannot confirm at this time how many and which games will be held for Spring Training and regular season, because all the teams raised their hands. Mexico is a priority for MLB and that will be seen on the day we announce the games, which will be before April 1," shared Fernández.
