The Caribbean Series begins today
The teams that will compete for the championship are: Granma Alazanes (Cuba), Mexicali Águilas (Mexico), Caguas Criollos (Puerto Rico), Licey Tigers (Dominican Republic), and Zulia Águilas (Venezuela).
Mexico seeks to have a proper performance this year
After Mazatlán Venados won last year, they will strive to achieve their tenth victory in the Series.
The tournament has stayed in Mexico nine times
The first team to win was Hermosillo Naranjeros in 1976. The legacy of Mexican baseball players was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It took almost 40 years for them to taste victory again; they were crowned champions in 2014.
The current representative, Mexicali Águilas, has won the championship once
This happened in 1986, and it was the second time that the national team achieved this feat. Maracaibo, Venezuela was the host.
Mexico has been crowned champions four times
In 1996, Tomateros won their third Caribbean Series title. They brought the honorable trophy for the fourth time in 2002, when the tournament was held in Caracas, Venezuela.
Rising victorious at home
Venados de Culiacán won the championship in 2005, when the host was Mazatlán, Mexico. Last year, they were crowned champions in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Impressive performance by Yaquis de Obregón
In 2011, they had a brilliant performance in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Two years later, Ciudad Obregón showcased their second title for Mexico.
Five teams have won the Caribbean Series for Mexico
Yaquis, Naranjeros, Tomateros, Venados, and Águilas represent Mexico this year. The Mexicali Águilas will strive to win the title for Mexico for the tenth time and match the other Mexican teams who have each won twice.
