Former president of the Peruvian Football Federation risks waiting for his trial in prison
The former president of the Peruvian Football Federation, Manuel Burga, risks waiting for the start of his trial on FIFA corruption charges in the United States while facing problems to support the bail required by the Brooklyn Court to maintain his current house arrest and avoid prison.
His current lawyer, according to the Andina agency, sent a letter to the Court requesting an extension of the deadline until January 8 to legally formalize the properties offered as bail. If the judges do not accept the extension, Burga could go to prison.
The lawyer cites health issues as reasons for the delay, stating that his client has undergone heart surgery, which has hindered the proceedings.
The former sports leader lives in a condominium in Brooklyn under custody and is only allowed to go to the gym located on an upper floor of the building.
Burga is initially involved in the trial that will take place next year against a group of former FIFA and Conmebol executives accused of receiving bribes from transnational companies.
A Brooklyn court granted him bail with restricted appearance, but the amount paid for his release was not revealed.
The bail was secured through family properties that Burga owns in the United States. Burga was extradited in early December and is accused by US justice of organized crime and money laundering.
