World Boxing Council Convention addresses doping and corner changes
The issues of doping and changes in corners that bring better benefits for boxers were the two main topics discussed in the second session of the World Boxing Council (WBC) Convention.
"These are topics of great interest to us, to start making changes. Especially regarding doping, the need to make boxers aware of the problems caused by performance-enhancing substances", explained Mauricio Sulaiman, recently reelected president of the WBC, to La Afición.
Regarding the changes in boxers' corners, Sulaiman revealed that there are significant risks every time a fighter goes into the corner accompanied by their father, so now they will seek to avoid them taking full responsibility.
"It's not that they can't go up with him... they can, but having the full responsibility of the fight leads the boxer to give much more and puts them at risk. It's something we cannot allow. That's why we will try to prevent boxers in 4, 6, and 8-round fights from being in that situation", he said.
In the case of world champions in that situation, such as Puerto Rican Danny Garcia, Nicaraguan Roman Gonzalez, and Leo Santa Cruz, they will be personally reviewed as they have years of work behind them.
The activities also addressed amateur boxing, women's boxing, and divisional rankings.
