Athlete Oscar Pistorius, convicted of murder, transferred to a better-equipped prison for disabled inmates

The former Paralympic runner has been moved from Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria to the nearby Atteridgeville Correctional Facility, which recently installed bathtubs as part of a renovation for disabled offenders, the Department of Correctional Services said on Monday.

The prison houses inmates with sentences of up to six years and has rehabilitation and development programs for the prisoners, the Department added. Until now, Pistorius' disability required him to be kept in a detention center at Kgosi Mampuru, which lacked these programs. The athlete has both legs amputated below the knee.

Pistorius is serving a six-year prison sentence for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013. The prosecution has appealed the sentence, considering it too lenient.
