Bayer Leverkusen and Mexican forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernández say goodbye to the German Cup in a penalty shootout after losing 6-5 to third division team Sportfreunde Lotte.
The “Chicharito” team had the chance, twice, to come out victorious from the FRIMO Stadion, after having a 1-0 advantage in regular time and a 2-1 advantage in extra time.
However, the lack of attention led the match to be decided from the penalty spot, where Lotte had more luck and ended up with a 4-3 scoreline.
In the first half, the “Aspirinas” took the lead 1-0 in the 25th minute, thanks to forward Kevin Volland, but the joy didn't last long as they were soon equalized 1-1 with an own goal by defender Roberto Hilbert at the beginning of the second half.
With the circumstances even, Leverkusen decided to do without “Chicharito” a few seconds before the end of the match, so the Jalisco striker couldn't contribute in the search for victory during extra time.
Despite this, the “Aspirinas” once again took the lead, scoring 2-1 in the 95th minute, again through Kevin Volland.
The home team didn't give up and attacked in search of the equalizer, which they celebrated in the 105th minute when forward Kevin Freiberg skillfully scored with his right foot.
This goal dampened Bayer's hopes, as they showed poor accuracy from the penalty spot, unlike Lotte, who converted one more goal to secure their place in the round of 16 of the German Cup.
