Dee Gordon hits a home run in the Marlins' first batting since the death of José Fernández, and Miami pays an emotional tribute to their deceased pitcher, defeating the New York Mets 7-3.
The Marlins, who wore black jerseys with Fernández's surname and number 16, totaled 14 hits during a game where ovations from the crowd combined with tears. It was Miami's first game since Cuban-born Fernández died on Sunday in a boating accident.
Adam Conley pitched three scoreless innings as a replacement for Fernández, who was scheduled to start this game. It would have been his last start of the year.
Justin Bour went 3-for-3 and Gordon had four hits, including the memorable home run. Mike Dunn (5-1) earned the win by pitching a perfect fourth inning.
Dominican Bartolo Colón (14-8) allowed seven runs, his highest total of the season, in two and a third innings. New York continues to lead the wild card race in the National League with five games remaining in the season.
For the Mets, Dominicans José Reyes went 1-for-5, Colón went 0-for-1, Alejandro de Aza went 0-for-1. Venezuelan Asdrúbal Cabrera went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Cuban Yoenis Céspedes went 0-for-5. Puerto Rican René Rivera went 0-for-3.
For the Marlins, Dominican Marcell Ozuna went 1-for-5. Venezuelan Martín Prado went 0-for-5. Cuban Adeiny Hechavarría went 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs.
