Today’s match against Lecce has been labeled a chance for a restart by Claudio Ranieri, and Roma certainly are in need of that restart. The Giallorossi haven’t won a league match since Halloween, and while their opponent list during that timespan has been intimidating, excuses don’t get you anywhere other than mid-table. With Christmas and the January mercato bearing down on Serie A, matches like today’s are both a last-ditch opportunity for Roma players on the outs and an opportunity for Florent Ghisolfi to determine just what reinforcements will be needed to turn this season around.
With that in mind, it makes sense that Ranieri has tweaked his lineup yet again, as Alexis Saelemakers and Stephan El Shaarawy replace Artem Dovbyk and Bryan Cristante in the starting eleven. We’ll see if this reset breathes some new life into this Giallorossi side, but I’m officially in the “I need to see it before I believe it” phase of the season. Restarts are nice in theory, but they actually have to translate to change—and wins—before I start believing.
