One of Mexico's top athletes, he has been practically a guarantee on the delegation's medal table since Sydney 2000.

On that occasion, he won three medals, gold in his favorite event, the 150-meter individual medley in the SM3 category, and silver in the 50-meter butterfly.

Since winning the gold medal in backstroke during his first Olympic event, he has not relinquished it and repeated the feat in Athens 2004, where he also won bronze in the 150-meter individual medley, in Beijing 2008, London 2012, and now he will attempt it in Rio 2016.

The sum of his achievements gives him a total of seven Olympic medals, five gold, one silver, and one bronze, a feat that few athletes can boast. That is why he will be seen as the rival to beat in the competition that will start on September 7th.

He is also the holder of four Parapan American medals, all of them in Mar del Plata 2003; he reached the top of the podium in the 50-meter butterfly and backstroke events, as well as silver in the 50 and 200-meter freestyle.

In addition to this, his list of achievements is completed by eight world championships, five in the 50-meter backstroke in 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2013, in the 50-meter butterfly in 2002 and 2006, and in the 150-meter individual medley in 2002.
