Netherlands fans adopt Liverpool's Van Dijk chant ahead of England semi-final

Netherlands fans have been gearing up for their Euro 2024 semi-final against England by taking to the streets in Germany, and singing a song very familiar to Liverpool fans.

The Netherlands will be well-represented in tonight’s Euro 2024 semi-final against England, and Liverpool fans may well hear a familiar song during the game.

There is plenty of Reds representation for new boss Arne Slot to keep his eye on in this evening’s clash in Dortmund. Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo will almost certainly start for the Dutch, while Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Ryan Gravenberch could also be involved.

Ahead of the game, Netherlands fans have been filling the streets of Dortmund, with the Three Lions looking as though they will be in the rare position of being outnumbered.

Decked out in their traditional orange, the Dutch supporters have been serenading their hosts with a few numbers, including one heard at Anfield most weeks.

A video posted on social media shows supporters partying in the streets, with some fans even climbing street signs in order to get a better vantage point. All the while, they’re singing the Virgil van Dijk song that has become a staple for Liverpool fans over the years.

Sung to the tune of ‘Dirty Old Town’, a Ewan MacColl song made famous by The Pogues, the chant has been heard all over the continent as the Reds have taken it across Europe, with Dutch fans clearly liking the sound of it:

He's our centre-half,

He's our number four,

Watch him defend,

And we watch him score,

He'll pass the ball,

Calm as you like,

He's Virgil van Dijk, He's Virgil van Dijk…

It might well get some more airtime this evening as Van Dijk captains his country to what he hopes will be a first major tournament final since the 2010 World Cup.

Liverpool.com says: With Liverpool not in action at the moment, it’s good to hear a familiar song getting a run-out. Loyalties will be divided tonight with Reds representing both sides, although you certainly won’t hear England fans singing about Alexander-Arnold.
