MADISON, Wis. -- It was a day to remember for Wisconsin right-hander Tessa Magnanimo, who struck out 6 batters and allowed just 1 walk on her way to a no-hitter and a 3-0 win over Minnesota.
The Gophers' only baserunner reached in the bottom of the first. Jess Oakland drew a four-pitch walk. Magnanimo responded with two strikeouts to end the inning, then was perfect the rest of the way.
Magnanimo was able to get lots of favorable contact, with the Gophers grounding out six times. Badger fielders committed no errors, and a spectacular diving catch from Skylar Sirdashney at third base in the seventh inning helped seal the deal.
At the plate, the Badgers were only able to manage 5 hits. However, one of those was a big one. Hilary Blomberg was able to tee off for a two-run double in the top of the third inning to give Wisconsin the lead and eventual win.
Wisconsin fell victim to a pair of bizarre baserunning errors, but were eventually able to score a third run in the top of the seventh inning.
This was the 12th no-hitter in program history for the Badgers, coming a year to the day from the last one. Maddie Schwartz no-hit Purdue on April 17, 2023. It was Wisconsin's first win over Minnesota in Minneapolis since 2016.
Things weren't so fun for the Badgers in Game 2 of the double-header. Shelby Jacobson lasted 5 innings, allowing 6 earned runs on 5 hits and a tough 7 walks. Blomberg was brought in for the sixth inning and allowed 1 hit while striking out a batter.
Gophers pitcher Macy Richardson was able to limit the Badgers to 5 hits and 3 runs for a second consecutive game. She struck out 4 Badgers while walking 2.
The game was defined by a three-run home run from Oakland that broke a tie and gave the Gophers a 6-3 lead.
The Badgers return home on Friday for a three-game series against Penn State. The first game is set for 5 p.m. at the Goodman Diamond.
