Short gap
Alianza Lima and Universitario de Deportes are quite evenly matched in the home and away finals not only because of their performance this season, being the teams that have received the fewest goals or those who are quite strong at home; but also because their coaches await a quite short distance considering the past times they have had to face each other: one victory each and two draws.
The first time was in 2014, when Jorge Fossati was coaching Peñarol and Mauricio Larriera was coaching Racing de Montevideo. In that season, on February 23rd, both teams drew 1-1 playing at 'negriamarillo's' home coached by the current coach of Universitario. The next meeting between them would be five years later.
On October 5th, 2019, when Larriera coached Danubio, he faced River Plate de Montevideo coached by Jorge Fossati and both drew 1-1 again. On that occasion, the local team was the current coach of Alianza Lima. The following year, on September 5th, 2020, the coach of the 'íntimo' team was coaching Montevideo Wanderers and lost 0-2 at home against River Plate de Montevideo, still coached by the 'merengue' coach. However, the rematch would come on March 5th, 2022, when Peñarol, this time coached by Larriera, won away 0-1 against Danubio coached by Jorge Fossati.
In general, the matches between the two coaches have been quite close, both draws were 1-1 and then both won away. First Fossati by 0-2 and then Larriera by 0-1. This Saturday, November 4th, at the Monumental stadium, they will face each other for the fifth time, although this time for the definition of a national championship. It is worth remembering that the second leg final will be played on Wednesday, November 8th at 8:00 pm at Matute.
