This Monday, October 30, is being a spectacular day for Peruvian sports, as the national delegation has reached twenty medals in the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games (six gold, two silver, and twelve bronze). The latest addition in this day was Itzel Delgado, who won a silver medal in the Stand Up Paddle Race category. Undoubtedly a pride for our country.
While our compatriot could not surpass the American Connor Baxter (12:49.9), as he finished behind with a time of 13:25.2, that was enough to stay ahead of Argentine Santino Basaldella, who completed the podium with a time of 13:59.4. In this way, our representatives continue to bring us joy in the southern country.
Previously, Peru also celebrated thanks to the gold medals won by Benoit 'Piccolo' Clemente, Lucca Mesinas, and Maria Fernanda Reyes. The first one defeated Chilean Rafael Cortez in the male category of the Longboard Surf modality, dominating his heat from start to finish without any setbacks.
Mesinas, on the other hand, defeated the Venezuelan Francisco Bellorin in Shortboard Surf: after the heats, the score was clear and decisive, as Lucca's 13.16 against 'Lolo's' 9.10 determined the national triumph. Mafer', on the other hand, did not have an easy time in the women's Longboard Surf, as Brazilian Chloe Calmon started better. Our representative waited for a good wave for more than half an hour and, minutes before the end of the competition, she caught one that allowed her to raise her score in the last heat.
From what could be seen on the broadcast, what Reyes did was tremendous, as it seemed that the gold medal was slipping away. With this, she avenged what happened at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, where she won the silver. Without a doubt, an example of perseverance and fight.
Prize for the medalists
It is necessary to mention that the Peruvian Institute of Sports (IPD) will reward the best athletes with a monetary prize, according to the type of medal. Athletes will receive 80,000 soles for each gold medal, 60,000 soles for silver, and 30,000 soles for bronze. Note that the prize will accumulate if they win more than one medal.
