Mexico and Germany will meet again next Tuesday after five years since the historic victory of the Tricolor over the Germans in the first group stage match of the Russia 2018 World Cup. Among the nine survivors of that 0-1 match, the presence of Hirving 'Chucky' Lozano, the goalscorer, stands out.

The survivors of Russia 2018

Out of the 28 players that took the field at Luzhniki on June 17, 2018, in the first match of the group stage of the Russia 2018 World Cup, only nine have been called up for the reunion between Mexico and Germany five years after the historic victory of the Tricolor over the Germans.

For Germany, there are four players who experienced the defeat against Mexico. Mats Hummels, Joshua Kimmich, and Thomas Muller, who were starters five years ago, plus Julian Brandt, who came off the bench.

From Mexico, the presence of Hirving Lozano, the goalscorer against Germany, stands out. In addition to Lozano, Guillermo Ochoa, Jesús Gallardo, Edson Álvarez, and Raúl Jiménez remain in the Tricolor squad.

Changes in the coaching staff

Joachim Low, for Germany, and Juan Carlos Osorio, for Mexico, were the coaches of their respective teams in the Russia 2018 World Cup. Both head coaches are no longer with their teams.

After Joachim Low, who left in July 2021, Germany has had three more coaches, including interim ones. Hansi Flick took over but left after the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Rudi Voller coached for one match until Julian Nagelsmann arrived last September.

On the other hand, Juan Carlos Osorio left Mexico after the participation in Russia 2018. Ricardo Ferretti served as interim coach for six games until Gerardo Martino finally took charge and led the team towards Qatar 2022. After the World Cup, Diego Cocca took over the coaching position but was dismissed after four months, and Jaime Lozano took the reins.

How did they fare in Qatar 2022?

Germany and Mexico both failed in the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Both teams were eliminated in the group stage after only managing to accumulate four points. However, the Germans finished 17th in the final standings, while the Tricolor finished 22nd.

Mexico, placed in Group C, started the World Cup with a goalless draw against Poland. They lost 2-0 to Argentina and sealed their failure with a 1-2 victory over Saudi Arabia.

Germany, just like in Russia 2018, began their journey in Qatar 2022 with a defeat, this time 1-2 against Japan. They then drew 1-1 with Spain. Despite a 2-4 victory over Costa Rica, they did not advance to the knockout stage.
