Atlético Nacional faced Palmeiras, leader of Group A in the Women's Libertadores Cup, and was defeated 4-3 in what was a great back-and-forth match with many emotions.
The Verdolagas, who had already secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the competition, wanted to finish first in the group, but the Brazilian team once again showed their quality to achieve a perfect score. Nacional advanced in second place with 6 points, while the players from Barcelona of Ecuador and Caracas of Venezuela were eliminated.
The hope for Nacional grew very quickly when Sara Córdoba opened the scoring in the 2nd minute, however, at the 26th minute of the first half, Palmeiras equalized with a goal from Bia Zaneratto, and they went into halftime with a 1-1 draw.
In the second half, goals rained from both sides. Palmeiras took an early lead with Zaneratto scoring her second goal, but Atlético Nacional reacted and responded with two goals in five minutes to take the lead. The goals were scored by Marcela Restrepo and Josselyn Espinales.
With ten minutes left, victory seemed within reach for Nacional, however, Palmeiras showed their quality in the final minutes and scored two goals to secure a 4-3 win. Lorena Benítez and Flavia Mota added the final scores.
Atlético Nacional will now have to wait for their quarterfinal opponent. The Antioquia-based team will face the second-placed team from Group B.
