With three goals from forward Ángel Sepúlveda, Cruz Azul defeated Necaxa 3-1 to climb out of last place in the table.
Sepúlveda scored at the 21st and 90th minutes. He added the third goal in the 10th minute of stoppage time.
La Máquina, who had just won against San Luis, achieved back-to-back victories for the first time in seven months and now has 10 points to move up to 16th place.
Cruz Azul, led by Joaquín Moreno, needed the victory to keep their chances of reaching the final stage of the Mexican championship alive.
In Mexico, only the top six teams advance directly to the final stage. The next four teams face each other in a playoff to complete the quarterfinals.
Los Rayos, who had a streak of four unbeaten matches, remain with eight points and are at the bottom of the table.
