Malcolm Marx was removed from the Springboks squad due to a knee injury, shortly before the match against Romania for the second round of the World Cup.
The South Africa hooker, who had not been included in the starting lineup against Romania, suffered a knee injury during training on Wednesday.
With a squad of 33 players and Bongi Mbonambi, Deon Fourie, and Marco van Staden as hooker options, coach Jacques Nienaber will not call for a replacement for that position, although he will announce the player who will join to complete the team during the week.
"First and foremost, we are very disappointed for Malcolm and wish him the best in his recovery," Nienaber said. And he added: "He has been working very hard to arrive in the best possible way at the World Cup, and it is tragic that his campaign ends here. As a team, we will keep in touch with him, as well as with all the injured players, to support him as much as we can."
