To reach this stage, Fernández and Rubiños defeated the Canadian team 3-1 in the round of 16, then defeated Brazil 3-0 in the quarterfinals, and in the semifinals they defeated another Puerto Rican duo 3-1.
Previously, the Peruvian tennis players had already won a bronze medal in the Teams category at this same tournament along with Gonzalo Vera and Rodrigo Vigo
