Juan Pablo Varillas (Peru, 27 years old, ATP World Ranking No. 66) debuted with a victory at the ATP 250 in Gstaad against the lucky loser Otto Virtanen with solid sets that left a final score of 6-2 and 6-3 in one hour and 11 minutes of play.
His opponent changed at the last moment due to the disqualification of Swedish player Mikael Ymer (51st), sanctioned by the ITF for 18 months after failing to appear for three anti-doping tests in 2021.
Interestingly, Varillas had been eliminated in the Salzburg Challenger by Mikael's brother, Elias (No. 166). In the Austrian tournament, the Peruvian player was eliminated in the second round, and his last win outside the Challenger circuit was at Roland Garros against Hubert Hurkacz.
His next opponent will be Facundo Bagnis, who won in three sets against Arthur Rinderknech (No. 82) with scores of 6-2, 2-6, and 6-3 in two hours of play.
