Panama defeated the United States 5-4 in a penalty shootout (1-1 in 120 minutes) in San Diego, California on Wednesday and qualified for their third Concacaf Gold Cup final.
The Central American team took the lead through Ivan Anderson in the 99th minute, but Colombian-American Jesus Ferreira equalized in the 105th minute, forcing a penalty shootout in which goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera saved the penalties from Ferreira and Cristian Roldan.
After eliminating the reigning champions, Panama will compete for their first Gold Cup trophy on Sunday against the winner of the other Wednesday semifinal between Mexico and Jamaica.
