Peru's top tennis player had a challenging debut at Wimbledon and couldn't overcome Italian Lorenzo Musetti: he lost 3-0 in a match that lasted about two hours.

If something has been demonstrated by Juan Pablo Varillas throughout his career, it has been his ability to overcome any setback. That is why we are all sure that, despite losing 3-0 to Lorenzo Musetti in his debut at Wimbledon, he will have the opportunity to recover. Today was not the ideal day for our representative and the Italian confirmed his position as the 16th in the ATP ranking.

'Juanpi' (63 ATP) tried to keep up with Musetti but never found the way to match the pace of a match that lasted about two hours. With scores of 6-3, 6-1, and 7-5, the 'tano' had no trouble leaving the first Peruvian racket in his debut in the main draw of Wimbledon, the Grand Slam that is taking place in Great Britain.

Unforced errors were Varillas' Achilles heel. After his participation in Roland Garros, the national tennis player's strategy was to train in Argentina and not to participate in any other tournament. Undoubtedly, this played against him and his lack of rhythm made it difficult for him to adapt to the grass, a surface that Musetti dominates perfectly.

The last set was more even and could have had a better outcome for Varillas. Even when he reached 5-5, everything indicated that a tie break would come to give Juan Pablo one last chance, but it never happened and Lorenzo Musetti - who will face the winner of the match between John Isner and Jaume Munar - closed everything with a 7-5 that left no room for objection to the result.

Varillas' other challenges in July

After his participation in Wimbledon, the first Peruvian racket will travel to Australia to compete in the Salzburg Challenger 125 on clay in the week of July 10. In that tournament, Varillas will be the second seed, behind Spanish Roberto Carbellés Baena (ranked 53rd in the ATP ranking).

Later, 'Juanpi' will face the ATP 250 in (Switzerland), also on clay, in the week of July 17. This tournament brings good memories for the Peruvian, as last year he reached the quarterfinals, where he lost to Dominic Thiem. Finally, starting on July 24, our national representative will participate for the third time in his career in an ATP 500 tournament (the second highest level on the circuit after the Masters 1000) in Hamburg, Germany.
