What is the origin?
To understand the position, we must go back to the Renaissance and Victorian era. According to historians, it all originates from a daily tradition that we still do today: dressing up.
Back then, women's clothing was much more elaborate than men's. If we recall, you will remember that women used a crinoline or hoop skirt, which was worn under the clothing to shape the dress.
For obvious reasons, it was almost impossible for them to dress themselves, so many, especially those from the aristocracy, had people to help them. Meanwhile, most men went to war, where due to the context, they dressed without the support of servants and dressed themselves.
What does this have to do with the position of the buttons?
More than you imagine. Back then, it was believed that most people were right-handed, so when designing women's clothing, they thought about who would put it on.
Since women received help from their staff, they made it easier for them to put it on and sewed the buttons on the left side. While, as we already explained, when men dressed by themselves, they decided to sew these elements on the right side for their convenience.
How did this practice continue?
With the mass production of clothing. Remember that before, garments were designed with personal measurements, but then, due to expansion and production cutting reasons, they thought about sewing in predetermined sizes (XS-S-M-L-XL).
