Twice officially became the first female K-pop group to achieve the highest sales record with one million albums in the United States in June. South Korean groups such as BTS, TXT, and Stray Kids had previously achieved this feat.
Following this trend, this is not the first time that Twice has received international recognition, as at the beginning of 2023, they also became the top-selling girl group in North America during the first week of the release of their mini-album "Ready to be". Currently, this music material is on the Billboard 200 chart.
Who is Twice?
Regarding their origins, the company JYP Entertainment decided to create a survival reality show called "Sixteen" with 16 contestants, all aspiring to debut in Twice. In this program, the participants showcased their artistic abilities, and in the end, 9 young girls made it to the final stage.
Thus, Twice officially debuted on October 20, 2015, with the release of their mini-album "The Story Begins". The main song "Like OOH-AHH" became a K-pop hit. To this day, the members who continue in the group are: Momo, Nayeon, Tzuyu, Sana, Park Ji-hyo, Chaeyoung, Mina, Jeongyeon, and Dahyun.
Why Twice?
On the other hand, the term "Twice" represents an English word used to mean two times. That being said, the CEO of J. Y. Park explained that they chose this name because the female K-pop group would touch their fans' hearts in two ways: through their ears and their eyes.
The group's fandom is called ONCE, which refers to the idols' promise that if they are given the opportunity to be heard, they will return the love given more than once. After their debut, the band has won countless awards and is considered one of the most influential groups of the third generation of K-pop.
