Diego Elías will become the number 1 in the world of Squash starting Monday 17th. This is the first time that a Peruvian athlete and someone from South America reaches the top of the rankings. Just a few hours ago, he defeated Nathan Lake from England 3-0 and qualified for the quarterfinals of the British Open Squash.

Diego Elías won against Nathan Lake (11-8, 11-8, 11-7) in a 37-minute match. Nathan Lake is currently ranked 39th in the PSA. After the match, our national representative mentioned, "We have played a few times before and it's always difficult. He controls the ball well and can put any player in trouble, so I had to be ready for this and I'm glad I closed it in three."

Regarding his great position in the Squash world, Diego Elías stated: "It's a dream come true, but right now I'm playing the British Open and there's no time to think about that. I'm here to try to win the title, so I'll think about it on Monday."

It should be noted that to reach this stage, the Peruvian athlete defeated Joel Makin from Wales, who is currently ranked number 10 in the PSA, with a score of 3-1. The match lasted 72 minutes and had a special taste for the 'Puma' as he had lost against this opponent in the last Gillen Markets Canary Wharf Classic 2023 Championship. This Friday, he will face Victor Crouin from France, who is currently ranked eighth in the PSA.

What a moment for the 'Puma'

Without a doubt, last Tuesday was a great moment for Diego Elías and, of course, for the entire national sport. It was confirmed that starting from this Monday 17th, he will be the number 1 in the Squash world rankings. There were two key moments along the way: the six-week suspension against Mostafa Asal and the downfall of Mohamed ElShorbagy in the third round of the British Open Squash.

"It's history! Diego Elías will become the first South American to reach the top of the world rankings on Monday morning," the Professional Squash Association posted on their social media. The post continued as follows: "What a season it has been for 'the Puma', and he will become the fourth man to sit at the top of the rankings this season."
