According to reports from the EFE agency, sources from the white club stated that the reason for the assault was a verbal insult from Baena, referring to Fede Valverde's child after his wife Mina Bonino's pregnancy problems. Many are wondering exactly what was said to the Uruguayan to set him off.
In that Copa del Rey clash, Baena supposedly told Valverde: "Cry now that your child won't be born". The Villarreal player's words hurt ‘Pajarito’, who went after him in the parking area of the Santiago Bernabeu stadium to retaliate.
According to Carrusel Deportivo, the Uruguayan player told Baena "repeat to me what you said on the field about my child" and punched him in the face. Spanish media captured the Villarreal player with a swollen cheek after Valverde's assault.
Baena defends himself
The Spanish midfielder stated that it is "completely false" that he made a verbal insult referring to the Uruguayan's child, after his wife's pregnancy problems, during the Copa del Rey match between both teams last January, which led to Valverde's assault.
"Very happy with the impressive victory of the team in a venue like the Santiago Bernabeu, but at the same time very sad about the assault I suffered after the game and surprised by what is being said about me. IT IS COMPLETELY FALSE THAT I SAID THAT", he wrote on his social media.
