Macaulay Langstaff wrote his name into the National League history books by breaking Ricky Miller's record of the most goals in a league campaign during Notts County's 3-0 win over Wealdstone.

The Magpies took the lead early on when Sam Austin found space inside the area before perfectly placing the ball into the back of the net for his third league goal of the campaign.

And substitute Frank Vincent ensured of the three points 14 minutes from time, smashing home from inside the area to become the 16th different scorer for Luke Williams' side this season.

The Notts head coach made three changes to the side that beat Altrincham 10 days prior, with Aden Baldwin, Richard Brindley, and Jodi Jones all coming in - star man Ruben Rodrigues left out of the matchday squad as a precaution with Wrexham on the horizon.

Following an emotional minute's applause ahead of kick-off after the sad passing of much-loved CEO Jason Turner, the Magpies almost provided the perfect start when Aaron Nemane's cross was turned away by the Wealdstone defence as Austin was crowded out on the follow-up.

But the Notts number eight was able to find his third league goal of the season five minutes later - Langstaff able to capitalise on a poor pass out from the back by Jack Cook, finding Austin inside the area to beautifully curl the ball in off the post - producing an equally beautiful celebration as he raced to the touchline to pose with a t-shirt worn by the players in memory of Mr. Turner.

Knowing just one more goal would break the National League record for the most goals in a league season, Langstaff came close twice in quick succession, first nodding Austin's dinked ball into the area off the post, shortly after, steering Jones' dangerous delivery towards goal only for Sam Howes to push away.

And the National League's leading marksman was once again denied on the cusp of Steven Copeland's half-time whistle, latching on to Matty Palmer's ball in behind the Wealdstone defence only for Howes to smother the ball at his feet.

But having been denied three times already, there was not a single fan inside Meadow Lane who thought Langstaff would spurn a fourth opportunity of the game when Archie Mair's clearance fell straight into the path of the Notts number nine, taking his time before firing his effort into the bottom corner to see him take his total to 41 for the season and break yet another scoring record.

And the points were sealed 14 minutes from time - Cedwyn Scott almost marked his first appearance in nearly two months with a goal only to see his effort repelled by Howes, fortunately, it fell into the path of Vincent to smash beyond Howes to take the Magpies' total to 100 points for the season.

Here is how we rated the Magpies this afternoon.

Archie Mair - 8

Another extremely impressive performance from the Norwich City loanee, looking evermore comfortable with the ball in his possession and making a few smart stops throughout.

Kyle Cameron - 7

Lead his side to yet another clean sheet this season, commanding his area well throughout and offering an option when his side drove forward.

Aden Baldwin - 7

Produced several vital interceptions from crosses into the area but did gift possession to the opposition on a couple of occasions. Looked to drive from the back and dealt well with the threat of Olomola.

Richard Brindley - 7

A first start in almost three months, but you would never have guessed it. Looked as calm and composed as ever when in possession and remained solid defensively throughout.

Adam Chicksen - 7.5

Another hard-working display from the wing-back, remaining defensively sound throughout and creating some decent opportunities from the wide positions.

Aaron Nemane - 7.5

Was strong and direct with his running today, almost adding to his assist tally early on when drilling a low effort into the box.

John Bostock - 8

Continues to work so brilliantly alongside Palmer in midfield, combining composure in possession but that bite in winning the ball back.

Matty Palmer - 9

Another maverick midfield display from Palmer, breaking up play and winning possession on numerous occasions while also offering that cutting edge when going forward.

Sam Austin - 9

Opened the scoring with a beautifully placed finish. Continuously linked the play between midfield and attack, proving a real nuisance for the Wealdstone defence with his endless energy in the press.

Jodi Jones - 7

Unable to really influence the game during his time on the pitch. Maintained possession well but with one eye on Wrexham, was substituted just after the hour-mark.

Macaulay Langstaff - 9

Came within inches of breaking the National League record three times during the first half, but was never going to be denied a fourth time. Showed great composure to score the most goals ever seen in a National League season.

SUBS:

Jim O'Brien - 6.5

Provided that energy for the final 20 minutes of the contest. Put himself about and got the crowd on their feet.

Frank Vincent - 7

Got the goal his performances in recent weeks have merited.

Cedwyn Scott - 6.5

Great to see him back out on the pitch after a sustained spell out. Huge for the final four games.
