Another skier managed to record the moment of the avalanche and how people were buried in the snow
Eight winter sports enthusiasts were found unharmed and two others are still missing after being caught in a snow avalanche in the Vorarlberg region (Austria) last Sunday, rescue services said.
The avalanche occurred around 15:00 local time at an altitude of about 2700 meters, on the ski slope of Lech Zürs.
The police initially spoke of "a dozen buried people," based on the video taken by a skier at the scene.
Among them, one was rescued and a second one was able to get out on her own and was taken to the hospital.
Another six people who appeared in the video were eventually found safe and sound.
"However, we still have no news of two people and we continue the search," said Hermann Fercher, director of the tourism office in charge of informing about the operation, to AFP.
Several helicopters and rescue teams accompanied by dogs were participating in the rescue operations.
The authorities have not provided information about the identity of the affected individuals.
The rescue services warned over the weekend of the risk of avalanches in the area and in neighboring Tyrol, pointing out the fragility of the snow layer in a context of mild weather.
In recent years, snowslides have caused an average of twenty deaths per year in Austria. AFP
