Errol Spence Jr. has survived yet another car accident.
The undefeated WBA/WBC/IBF welterweight champion was the victim in a two-vehicle accident Saturday evening at an undisclosed location in the greater Dallas area. Spence’s SUV was hit head-on by an underage and unlicensed driver who ran a red light.
Spence escaped relatively unscathed, though he complained of a leg injury during an Instagram Live session capturing the immediate aftermath while awaiting nearby authorities to arrive and conduct an on-site investigation.
“The muthafucka hit me… fucked my leg up. It’s crazy,” Spence stated. “He ran the light. Always happen to me. I’ve seen him coming too. He ran right into me.”
The severity of Spence’s leg injury as well as exactly where the accident took place remains undetermined as this goes to publish.
The identity of the driver was not revealed, though BoxingScene.com has learned it was a 14-year-old who took his parents’ vehicle out for a ride. The unidentified driver ran a red light and was unaware of his surroundings when he struck Spence’s SUV, which was totaled in the accident.
“I seen him coming, going fast as hell,” Spence stated in disbelief. “He hit me head on. My car is all metal, heavy as hell. I’m just glad I didn’t have my kids in there with me. I ain’t worried about no damn car, shoot.”
Ironically, the incident took place hours before Spence’s divisional rival, Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford (38-0, 29KOs) was due to defend his WBO welterweight title in Omaha, Nebraska. Crawford faces David Avanesyan (29-3-1, 17KOs) in lieu of an undisputed championship with Spence (28-0, 22KOs) after walking away from months-long negotiations.
Saturday’s scare marks at least the third car accident involving Spence dating back to October 2019. The unbeaten southpaw from Desoto, Texas survived a single-car crash in October 2019, suffering extensive injuries as he lost control and was ejected from his Ferrari. Spence pled guilty in June 2022 to driving while intoxicated (DWI) for which he received a three-day jail sentence and ordered to pay $3,400 in court costs.
Spence revealed prior to his stoppage win over Yordenis Ugas earlier this year that he was involved in a second car accident, roughly three months after the near-fatal October 2019 incident. In that instance, Spence revealed that he was rear-ended and was admittedly shook up while still pushing through post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
BoxingScene.com is still gathering full details from Saturday’s incident, though it was suggested by at least one party close to Spence that he is expected to be fine beyond his leg injury and overall soreness.
Spence has not fought since his April 16 tenth-round stoppage win over Ugas to unify the WBA, WBC and IBF welterweight titles atop a Showtime Pay-Per-View event from AT&T Stadium, home to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. In-ring plans are not yet confirmed for the 32-year-old southpaw, though it has been strongly suggested that he will next face WBC mandatory challenger and former unified WBA/WBC welterweight titlsit Keith Thurman (30-1, 22KOs) in the first quarter of 2023.
