The board of directors of Azul Azul approves the hiring of Mauricio Pellegrino as the new coach of Universidad de Chile

Mauricio Pellegrino was the number one candidate of sports manager Manuel Mayo and after his arrival in Chile on Saturday night, the economic issue was resolved, which was practically the only pending matter to finalize his arrival to the team.

The agreement was total among all the directors of Azul Azul for the hiring and the official announcement by the U is expected to be made on Monday.

Mayo, when he was part of the technical secretariat of the U, traveled to Spain on several occasions and forged a relationship with Pellegrino, who was the coach of Leganés, a friendship that proved crucial for his arrival to the U's bench.

The Argentine, 51, arrives after being unemployed since March, when he was separated from Vélez Sarsfield due to poor results in the 2022 season.

In his playing career, he had a great international trajectory being champion of the Libertadores and Intercontinental with Vélez Sarsfield, in addition to defending the colors of Barcelona, Valencia, Liverpool and Alavés.

As a coach, he has managed Valencia, Estudiantes de La Plata, Independiente, Alavés, Southampton, Leganés, and the aforementioned Vélez.
