Iran's selection had to make an emergency change 19 minutes into the match against England in the first round of Group B of the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand suffered a head injury after colliding with his own teammate and, despite his attempts, could not continue on the field.
At 7', the English team had a free kick from the right side, which was quickly executed with a low pass to Harry Kane. The Tottenham forward, without hesitation, sent a dangerous cross into the six-yard box, where Declan Rice and Raheem Sterling were waiting.
Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand tried to anticipate the play and, unable to stop his movement, ended up colliding faces with Majid Hosseini, his own teammate. Both players fell to the ground at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, and the doctors entered to provide assistance.
The central defender recovered immediately, but the goalkeeper was not as lucky. As a result of the collision, the goalkeeper became dizzy and suffered from uncontrollable nosebleeds, which caused concern for the coaching staff of the Iranian national team.
After receiving several minutes of attention, Beiranvand decided to continue on the field, assuring his captain Ehsan Hajsafi that he was in good condition. However, moments later Alireza, visibly struggling to stand, requested to be substituted. Coach Carlos Queiroz sent Hossein Hosseini onto the field.
