Boxing Council Determines Women's Fight Rules
After a meeting of the medical committee led by Mexican doctor Ricardo Monreal and the review of several studies conducted in the last year, the World Boxing Council determined that women cannot fight more than 10 rounds or increase the duration of the rounds from two to three minutes due to physical safety concerns.
"There is a false belief that women are not paid more money because they do not fight 12 rounds of 3 minutes each, and we will have to eradicate that belief. There is a great risk that women do it," explained the doctor, who has been involved in boxing for years.
During the presentation that took place during the 60th edition of the World Boxing Council Convention, Dr. Monreal explained that women naturally generate a greater amount of lactic acid and their neck is structured differently, so the impact is not assimilated in the same way.
"We will not yield to pressure to increase the length of the fight when we have studies that reveal it is dangerous and compromises integrity. We have been working for years to reduce the fight time due to the effects we have seen, and it would be illogical to increase it for women. Don Majestic said it, it is easier for men to decrease from 3 to 2 minutes before women increase. It is a matter of safety, not misogyny," added the leader.
Sulaiman Saldivar stated that by 2023, there is expected to be a convention exclusively for women where they will be supported to develop their careers in physical, economic, legal, and marketing aspects.
