What happened to Nicolás Córdova, the Chilean coach who saved 'U' from relegation in 2018?

Since they became champions in 2013, Universitario de Deportes has gone through many difficult moments in the Liga 1 and in international tournaments, but none of them was as tough as what they experienced in 2018.

In that season, the crema team was very close to being relegated to the second division. In fact, they occupied the last place in the overall standings for several rounds. Although it is true that at the end of the year, the merengue squad managed to turn the situation around with the support of their fans, Nicolás Cordova, the crema coach during that championship, had a lot to do with it.

The Chilean strategist achieved 11 valuable victories that allowed the 'U' to maintain their category and even fight for the Copa Sudamericana in the last few rounds. However, months later, he was fired due to poor results in the 2019 Apertura Tournament.

After his dismissal from the merengue club, Córdova did not sign with any team. It was not until the beginning of 2020 that he took charge of the Qatar U-23 national team. He didn't do so well with that category, as he only won three out of the 17 matches he coached.

Currently, the Chilean manages Al Rayyan from Qatar, former club of James Rodríguez. With the Qatari team, he has played a total of 24 matches (eight wins, three draws, and 13 losses).

The merengues will visit UTC this Friday, October 28 at 3:00 p.m. for the last round of the Clausura. The match will take place at the Heroes de San Ramón stadium and will be broadcasted by Gol Perú.
