The selection by Nat Geo is based on five categories, such as nature, adventure, culture, community, and family. The aim is to honor a destination that offers a relevant history that inspires the following year. Furthermore, the archaeological site of Choquequirao has been named one of the five must-visit adventure destinations for international tourists.

"For Peru, it is great news to be part of National Geographic's prestigious list of the best world destinations, as it allows us to give more impulse to the work that PROMPERÚ has been doing, oriented towards the recovery of tourism and the consolidation of our country's image," said the executive president of PROMPERÚ, Amora Carbajal.

Meanwhile, the Brand Director of the National Geographic Group Netherlands, Carolien van Hoorn, highlighted that the list came at a great moment, as the effects of the COVID-19 health crisis continue to diminish.

"This year's list comes at a great moment. Since the pandemic, people are fully enjoying the possibility of traveling again. National Geographic seeks to rethink what it means to be a traveler and how our travel choices impact our world and our communities," she said.
