Tomateros de Culiacán defeat Sultanes in extra innings

A cluster of five runs in the top of the tenth inning led the Tomateros de Culiacán to a 9-5 victory over the Sultanes in extra innings and to sweep Monterrey in the series held at Estadio Mobil Super.

Isiah Gilliam hit a Grand Slam to lead the cluster of five runs that ruined a comeback from the Fantasmas Grises, who had tied the game at four in the eighth inning.

After Gilliam's grand slam, Efrén Navarro got a hit and scored with Ali Solís' double to close the visitor's account.

The winning pitcher was Sasagi Sánchez with a save for Kevin Marnon. The loss went to Joe Riley.

Monterrey had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the tenth to score a run, with Carlos Figueroa's sacrifice fly. The game ended with a foul ball caught by the catcher Fernando Pérez.

At the start of the series, both teams had a record of 2-3. Now, Sultanes is 2-6 and Tomateros has improved to 5-3.

The home team hasn't won a game after four games.

Trailing 4-1 on the scoreboard, the Fantasmas Grises scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game, against the pitches of reliever Marshall Kasowski.

Fernando Pérez started with a hit to third base and scored with Jake Scheiner's double. Then, Ricardo Serrano hit his first home run of the season to right field to bring Scheiner home.

The Tomateros had taken a 3-0 lead in the third inning, taking advantage of the rookie pitcher Carlos Juan Viera's mistakes, who gave up two walks and threw three wild pitches.

Culiacán took a 4-0 lead in the fourth with a double steal. Emanuel Ávila stole home to score, in a play where Lupe Chávez had been caught stealing second base.

Sultanes' manager, "Jerry" Álvarez, used eight pitchers in the series to reach a total of 22. The Tomateros' offense has accumulated 46 hits in the three games.

Sitting at the bottom of the Liga del Pacífico standings, Monterrey will begin a three-game series in Ciudad Obregón against the Yaquis on Friday.
