After the attacks that the service received, the company decided to temporarily shut down the servers while they fix the errors.

Blizzard has temporarily deactivated the servers of Overwatch 2 to implement a series of corrections for the errors that have been occurring since its official launch on Tuesday, October 4th.

This second installment of the franchise, which replaces the first one, was presented as a "permanent free service" for PC, Xbox One and Series X/S, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Nintendo Switch platforms.

One of the measures contemplated by Defense Matrix is SMS protection, which introduces an additional layer of security in account verification, both to protect a compromised account and to prevent a penalized offender from accessing theirs.

Machine learning has been used for years to detect and prevent disruptive behavior, also in text chats, and now the company is going to extend it with audio transcriptions.

On the same day of its release, it suffered two massive denial of service (DDoS) attacks, which caused the servers to crash and prevented new players from accessing the game, as reported by the developer through Twitter.

Since then, the company has been working on these issues and on Thursday it decided to deactivate its servers to implement the necessary corrections, as announced in a recent update posted on the official forums.

Among the reported errors, Blizzard highlights some related to account merging, login, or the integration of new players into the system, for which it has already implemented the corresponding corrections.

On the other hand, the developer has specified that it has made "significant" updates to its databases to address the player queues generated by server malfunctions.

The company has also announced that it has chosen to eliminate the phone number requirements for most players with pre-existing profiles in Overwatch. In this way, any user with a Battle.net account (that is, all those who have played the game since June 9, 2021) will be able to access the video game without providing their mobile number.

However, it has indicated that players who were not linked to Battle.net, as well as new accounts, will have to comply with SMS protection requirements. The developer has emphasized that this helps to ensure there are no cheats in the user community.
