The Former Light Heavyweight Champion, Andre Ward, Criticizes Canelo vs Golovkin Rematch
Former light heavyweight champion, Andre Ward, was relentless in his opinion about the rematch between Mexican champion Saúl Álvarez and his eternal rival Gennady Golovkin in September.
Ward, who was considered as Golovkin's opponent in 2015 but couldn't make the fight happen, criticized the veteran Kazakh's performance as an analyst, stating that he only stepped into the T-Mobile ring to "cash a check".
On September 17th, Golovkin suffered the second defeat of his career at the hands of the Guadalajara fighter in a bout for the undisputed super middleweight crown.
In an interview with ESPN, the former world champion insisted that Golovkin fell victim to his age and that he has used the label of "Mexican style" as an excuse to justify the ease with which the punches connect. However, he also didn't exempt the Mexican monarch from criticism:
"I believe that Álvarez should have knocked out that version of Golovkin. If Canelo is who he claims to be, a great of all time, you have to take advantage of a fighter like that. Golovkin's performance was not impressive. I was surprised by the reaction and response of the people, who finally realized that he looks old."
The criticisms of Golovkin, who he accused of only facing Canelo as the A-side fighter throughout his career, border on the personal. For several years, Ward and the European fighter engaged in a war of words over the fight that they couldn't make happen and that apparently left Ward wanting to prove himself against what was, at that time, the most dangerous and highly effective fighter, Triple G.
Ward retired in 2017 after knocking out Sergey Kovalev and retaining the light heavyweight titles of the International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Association, and World Boxing Organization.
