"The National Prosecutor's Office has decided to formalize the investigation against Agustín Lozano Saavedra, in his capacity as former mayor of the District Municipality of Chongoyape, province of Chiclayo, for the alleged commission of the crime of Illicit Enrichment against the State." The official account of the Prosecutor's Office published.
The decision of the National Prosecutor, Patricia Benavides, responds to events between 2011 and 2018 when the current president of the Peruvian Football Federation was mayor of Chongoyape.
This situation is not new for Agustín Lozano since in 2021 he was already subject to preliminary investigation for allegedly significantly and unjustifiably increasing his wealth.
Among the allegations made at that time was a bidding process of the Municipality of Chongoyape for more than 300,000 soles with a ghost hardware store, and the increase in Agustín Lozano's assets after becoming mayor, including the purchase of land, a school, a radio station, and a football team.
It is worth mentioning that in June of this year, Agustín Lozano was acquitted by the Judiciary of the offenses of incompatible negotiation or undue exploitation of his position and ideological falsehood. This was due to an alleged favoritism towards Club Juan Aurich in the rental of the Municipal Stadium without authorization from the Municipal Council. The Prosecutor's Office requested 4 years in prison.
