Sporting Cristal
Sporting Cristal achieved an important victory last Sunday against Cienciano, in the 11th matchday of the Clausura. The celestial team is currently leading the tournament table (sharing the top spot with Atlético Grau), as well as the overall standings, which they aim to maintain in order to fight for the national title. One of the architects of this victory was Joffré Escobar.
The Ecuadorian forward was responsible for scoring Sporting Cristal's fourth goal, towards the end of the match. Regarding this, he expressed to GOLPERU's cameras that he is "very happy about the victory as we are competing at the top of both the Clausura and overall standings."
He also added, "I was looking for the goal, I knew it would come at some point, and how nice it was that it happened in this match. A forward lives off goals, and these are moments that one experiences. The goal wasn't coming to me, but fortunately, I scored. I hope to contribute with more goals."
One of the points that Escobar highlighted about the team is the internal competition, which he described as "very healthy, with a lot of camaraderie, and that is reflected on the field." However, he added that he will continue working to get more minutes, as for now he is the substitute for the second half.
He said, "Sporting Cristal is different, at U. San Martín, I was playing every match, but here I come to alternate in the second halves. I'm waiting for the opportunity that I know will come at some point." He even commented, "We were going through a tough time because the forwards weren't scoring, but today it happened that Irven [Ávila] also scored."
Sporting Cristal has 62 points in the overall standings and 24 in the Clausura table. The teams that are chasing them closely are Melgar (who also has 62 points in general and has 21 remaining in the tournament) and Atlético Grau (who have 24 points so far in the second semester).
