Sad news for national football came to light in the last few hours: Orlando 'Chito' de la Torre passed away at the age of 78, after several health complications. The former player had a prominent role in the history of the Peruvian national team and became an idol of Sporting Cristal.

The unfortunate news was revealed by journalist Carlos Alberto Navarro through Twitter, who indicated that the remembered national defender lost his life during the night prior to Thursday, August 25th. At the moment, it has not been revealed where his remains will be mourned.

Throughout his outstanding career, the decorated defender wore the shirts of Sporting Cristal, Sport Boys, Atlético Chalaco, and Juan Aurich in Peru, as well as Barcelona from Ecuador. De la Torre had his best years with the team from Rímac, being champion in 1961, 1968, 1970, and 1972.

Precisely, due to his good performances, Orlando became a regular player for the national team and is remembered for his great performance at La Bombonera, as he was key to qualifying for the 1970 World Cup.
