Carlos Cáceda becomes hero of FBC Melgar's historic qualification against Inter de Brasil in the quarterfinals of the Copa Sudamericana 2022.

Through a dramatic penalty shootout, the Peruvian national team goalkeeper stood out in the match to lead the team from Arequipa to the semifinals. However, this is not the first time that the popular 'Chany' has won a penalty shootout in a Conmebol international tournament.

A few years ago, when the goalkeeper wore the Universitario de Deportes jersey, he achieved success in an important international youth tournament. At that time, by saving two consecutive penalty shootouts, the goalkeeper won the Copa Libertadores Sub-20 with Universitario de Deportes by defeating Boca Juniors.

The winning team of that edition was managed by coach Javier Chirinos and included players like Edison Flores, Andy Polo, Willyam Mimbela, and Christopher Gonzales. However, the popular 'Pantera' gained recognition through that tournament after his performance in the penalty shootout against Alianza Lima in the semifinals of the Libertadores Sub-20.

In that blanquiazul team, there were players of the caliber of Paolo Hurtado, Carlos Ascues, Yordy Reyna, 'Churrito' Hinostroza, Luis Trujillo, and Jorge Bazán. The latter would miss the decisive shot against Carlos Cáceda, giving Universitario de Deportes the pass to the final of the Copa Libertadores Sub-20.

After defeating their arch-rival, the story would repeat itself in the final, but this time against a South American giant, Boca Juniors. The match ended in a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes, so the only way to determine the champion was through a penalty shootout.

Once again, 'Chany' stood as the guardian of the Universitario de Deportes goal at the north end of the Estadio Monumental, in front of 60,000 spectators, to give the team their first international youth title in the history of the club.
