Sir Nick Faldo broke down in tears on Sunday as his illustrious broadcasting career came to an end.

The 65-year-old Englishman, who won six majors as a player, joined the CBS team in 2006 and quickly established himself as a fan favourite.

An emotional Faldo described his on-screen colleagues, Jim Nantz, Frank Nobilo and Ian Baker-Finch, as "brothers" as he struggled to contain his emotions.

"I'm a single child and I've found, at 65, three brothers. Thank you," said Faldo.

Faldo, who was knighted for his services to golf and won The Open and Masters three times each, also recalled the moment that he was contacted about joining the CBS broadcast team 16 years ago.

"I was in a boat in Ireland, and they gave me a call and said, 'How would you like to sit next to Jim Nantz?' and I literally fell out the boat, I really did. That was 2006, and here we are 16 years later," Faldo said.

"Thanks to all the crew. As I affectionately and respectfully call you the workers, they put the pictures out, we do the rattling, we have an easy job. Thank you all."

Nantz paid tribute to Faldo's broadcasting career as he tried to regain his composure.

"You've been the best in the world twice and that my friend is extraordinary," Nantz said during Faldo's final sign-off following the broadcast of the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina.

"You did it with humor, humility and humanity. It's fair to say you led a sea as a broadcaster. May the sands of time be very kind to you, my friend."

Faldo's decision to bring his broadcast to an end came as somewhat of a surprise. The 2008 Ryder Cup captain will now pursue other opportunities and continue to work on his golf design business.
