Football player saves his mother's life with liver donation

The forward is about to make his comeback with Cibalia Vinkovci, from the Croatian Second Division, after donating 70% of his liver to his mother.

Robert Peric-Komsic, Bosnian forward of Cibalia Vinkovci from the Croatian Second Division, stars in an impressive story by deciding to leave football to save his mother's life.

In March of this year, when he had not yet turned 23, the soccer player decided to donate 70% of his liver to his mother, Ljiljana, who has been sick for 13 years and went through three transplant processes with different donors, all rejected by her body.

"Her life was in danger, her stomach was filling with water and it was a matter of days... At the moment I knew that all other options were exhausted, I packed my things and flew to Istanbul. My mission was clear, to heal my mother. Everything else was less important or completely unimportant," said Peric-Komsic.

Almost five months after the transplant, the forward is now ready to return to football: "All my findings are normal, the liver regenerated almost completely two months after the surgery. I think I'll play a competitive match very soon."

"Without any heroism, I did what I believed anyone would do who grew up in a functional family. My mother gave me life and I extended it to her, she finally got a new life after 13 years of hard struggle," he added.
